Invisalign is an orthodontic treatment that shifts teeth into more optimal positions using a series of customized clear aligners. Each set is designed to be worn for twenty to twenty-two hours every day for two weeks before the patient switches to the next one. While this treatment is incredibly effective, a patient may need to receive extra aligners due to noncompliance or unforeseen circumstances. Here’s why Invisalign refinements can be necessary in some cases.
Why Are Invisalign Refinements Necessary?
If a patient’s teeth are not aligning properly or if the gaps between their teeth are not closing during Invisalign treatments, the orthodontist may need to make adjustments. While Invisalign typically takes between twelve and eighteen months to complete, poor oral hygiene, not wearing the aligners enough, and other factors can complicate the process. If the patient develops tooth decay or gum disease, these issues will have to be treated before the treatment can continue, and if they neglect to wear their aligners sufficiently, their teeth may not be ready when it’s time to switch to a new set.
How Do Invisalign Refinements Work?
Part of the reason why regular orthodontic checkups are necessary while wearing Invisalign is to see if refinement aligners are necessary. Invisalign refinement aligners are just like the regular aligners except that they are designed to adjust the course of treatment. If your orthodontic process is not going as planned, your dentist may measure your teeth again to create new sets of aligners to get your smile back on track. Once you receive your refinement aligners, you will need to wear them just like you would your regular aligners.
Not wearing them allows your teeth to shift back out of alignment, which is why it is so important to wear them for at least twenty hours every day as recommended. Ideally, you will only take them out for eating and oral hygiene, meaning that it’s a great idea to schedule these activities ahead of time so you can meet your aligners’ minimum wear requirements. By following your orthodontist’s instructions precisely, you can ensure that your treatment is as brief and effective as possible.
